Most people have encountered the frustrating problem of cracks in their basement walls and stubborn water leaks after a heavy rain. They try to fix the crack themselves with a silicone based caulk, which usually doesn't get the job done. Unsatisfied with their "band-aid" repair, they remove the caulk, attempt to chisel out the crack and fill it with hydraulic cement. Hydraulic cement does not bond well to concrete and isn’t able to withstand the expansion and contraction caused by change in temperature. Efflorescence (white, “fuzzy” calcium deposits) will often start coming up around the plug and water follows shortly after. Eventually the plug will come loose and water intrusion will be a concern again.
